It is often said, rightly or wrongly, that footballers are not the brightest group, but Andrey Hungovic Nguyễn breaks the mold.
The overseas Vietnamese midfielder, known as Nguyễn Anh Hùng in Vietnamese, chose the beautiful game over a potential high-flying career in aeronautical engineering.
Although he joined the V.League 1 Hải Phòng club last year, Nguyễn remains somewhat unknown to Vietnamese football fans.
The 22-year-old was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. He has a Vietnamese father and a Russian mother, and when he was young he passed the entrance examination to the Moscow Aviation Institute and played in the institute's football club.
“I studied math and physics in high school. In my third year, I left because I always wanted to be a professional footballer. My family wanted me to pursue the career of my father, who had to be a pilot or an aeronautical engineer, at least a career associated with aviation, but I couldn't. Football has been my dream since I was born, ”said Nguyễn.
Nguyễn started coaching football at the Mosvkovich club at the age of six. He and his teammates have won the children's soccer championship four years in a row and he won the award for best player in 2009 and 2011.
After that, Nguyễn joined the Orbita club and joined the amateur football league in Moscow, winning three championships.
In 2015, Nguyễn decided to return to Việt Nam to pursue a career in the game, but without success.
Upon returning to Russia, Nguyễn graduated from high school and studied at the Moscow Aviation Institute and was selected for the school's football team while continuing to train and play for Orbita. .
Although he lived in Russia, Nguyễn enthusiastically followed Vietnamese football and still had the dream of playing in Vietnam.
These dreams came true when Hải Phòng hired him.
Adventure in V.Ligue 1
Despite joining the north side of the port in July 2019, Nguyễn had to wait almost a year to make his first national first division appearance in the game against Sài Gòn FC on July 5.
Although his team lost by two goals to nil and their first performance was largely unremarkable, just stepping onto the pitch was a big encouragement for Nguyễn.
"Nguyễn is making progress and has plans for the future," said Hải Phòng coach Phạm Anh Tuấn.
Life off the pitch in Việt Nam has many surprises in store for Nguyễn.
“Things were difficult on my first visit to Việt Nam. It took me a few weeks to familiarize myself with the Vietnamese weather after winter in Russia. I didn't have a lot of issues with the food, I just don't speak Vietnamese. I was very surprised by the life of professional players. I was lucky that my coach and my teammates helped me gain the confidence to train physically and learn tactics, ”said Nguyễn.
Fortunately, Nguyễn also received support from his teammates, especially two other Vietnamese footballers from abroad on the team, Adriano Schmidt and Martin Lo.
“They help me a lot, both at work and in life. Martin Lo is my brother, teacher and translator in Việt Nam. It helps me understand the tactical plans of the head coach, who has a lot of specialized words that cannot be expressed with body language, ”said Nguyễn.
Nguyễn said he was learning Vietnamese to compete well in Việt Nam.
Hải Phòng has a certain history with Vietnamese players abroad and the Russian-Vietnamese goalkeeper of Nguyễn, Đặng Văn Lâm, has become the club's celebrity.
“Like all football teams in the world, Haiphong has many advantages in creating conditions for players like me. When I saw the Haiphong fans for the first time, I felt their love for the team. I will strive step by step to learn and consolidate my position within the club” said Nguyễn.
